        the post war period of film was a period occupied by westerns, musicals, and noir. As the rise of television threatened the film industry it began to showcase its specific strengths utilizing color and sound to its fullest. Additionally during this time the film industry faced the McCarthy witch trials which caused many directors and other film makers to get black listed. During this time the story's that film portrayed became darker with anti-heroes being highlighted and characters who did permissive acts. misery likes company and  a country ravaged by war wanted to escape to the cinema and embrace dark story's. also during this time in the foreign market Italian surrealism and Japanese art film. the major directors of this period include Olsen Wells and Alfred Hitchcock.
