Metropolis Summarizer
A mediator is any individual that attempts to bridge the divide between the rich and the poor. These two classes do not have a practical understanding of how the other operates. so in order to enact change we must have an individual, typically from the rich, understand the other side. every great social advance in history follows this basic pattern, as when destroying the system the rebuilt system typically does not effectively address the concerns of the revolution, a mediator is required.
All art can be viewed as a political act. this is particularly true of narrative arts, such as film. So based on Lang's chosen medium, he is always going to make a political statement in his work. Thus influencing his audience.
On a more surface prospective, the fact that this film uses advert political and economic imagery to critique current economic systems shows an obvious attempt to influence.
Within this film, he is advocating for a capitalist system. At the beginning of the film, a fascist economic system is shown. The people of metropolis live in a command economy in which all economic choices are made by a singular autocrat. and by showing people slowly lumber forward a clear critique of fascism, which was the German standard, is seen. From this critique two primary solutions could be found. Lang could have concluded the film with the workers revolt resulting in the creation of a new Marxist state. But, he did not view that as a feasible solution. So he concludes the film with a compromise between the two classes, the compromise is capitalism.
Metropolis was extremely influential developing the basic Science fiction aesthetic that would be used over and over again in films such as blade runner, The 5th element, and Star Wars. This surface level influence is clear. A more interesting influence it had can be seen in how it effected action movies. the roof top on the church near the end created a typical set up that would be used over and over again. Two characters fighting with a women in between that the protagonist is trying to save. Furthermore, this scene has been highly influential on Batman with Tim Burton practically copping it.
