Montage Summary Blog Post

        Montage has various uses in a film, from the prospective of the director it is useful in generating additional meaning, either in a comparative context or to show the passing of time. from a comparative prospective, by using montage you can create a connection between two different ideas. for example: if you are shooting an action scene, by occasionally editing back and fourth to a clock, a sense of limited time is created by exhibiting a connection between the actions in the scene to a particular time frame, thus increasing the tension of the scene. A similar example of this can be seen in the Godfather scene above, connecting a baptism to a murder. The other primary advantage to montage editing, as a tool, is that it allows one to break reality in a non-intrusive way. this is exemplified by the scene from Up shown above. In seven minutes we see the entirety of a man's life, this is done by compressing life into a few shots provided fades between.
        on the audience a montage illustrates the intentions of the director as explained previously, while also serving to create prolonged mental connections and create interest. psychologically, montage can be used to create a prolonged and powerful mental connection in a viewers mind, it is for this reason this style of editing is used in commercials and was developed for propaganda.  And on the most basic level, a montage makes scenes more interesting.
