Folly is when you use sounds produced in post production to create the sound design of a film. this makes production far easier and the sound design of a film far more complex and rich. even snow does not sound as much like snow as cornstarch. in my films i have used folly in order to create noises that need to be there for the visual elements to work that were picked up in bad EQ environments.  an example of this can be herd in the car door slamming in speaking of courage. if i were ever to do a film in which the sound design was important in developing tension i would end up using folly, stabbing melons. And as in the speaking of courage example if the sounds are required to the film working well. most of the needed folly effects for the type of films i'm making can be produced by just putting a mic in an environment such as a car to get white noise, or manipulating simple sounds such as a car door for a car door or some water from a sponge for rain.
